Volts, Amps, and Watts

The most basic electrical principle is known as law (Ohms law). This relates resistance, current, and voltage to one another. For example, if you want a higher current (amps) you have to lower the resistance or increase the voltage.

The best analogy is with water. Voltage represents the pressure while current represents the potential flow. Power, or watts, represents the product of the pressure and the flow which would give you the potential rate of flow.

A pressure washer might have a very high pressure, but overall, a low flow rate since the nozzle is very small. A garden hose would have lower pressure but with a larger diameter, would actually give you a much higher overall flow (power rating. A fire hose would have the same pressure as the garden hose (voltage) but with a much higher flow rate, or potential power.
